On National Philanthropy Day, we celebrate 45 years with the VOCM Cares Foundation!
VOCM Cares has been a household name for decades, and this year marks our 45th anniversary.
Our primary mission at VOCM Cares is to support communities across Newfoundland and Labrador through charitable causes. We achieve this primarily through Community Service Initiatives and Program Funding.
As we are all aware, the past few years have presented additional challenges, and the demands on community-based organizations have continued to increase. We’ve seen this first hand with our Community Service Initiatives. You may be familiar with them:
VOCM Cares Janeway Family Support Fund In partnership with the Janeway Foundation; funds are provided to provide support to Janeway patients and their families. This support can be anything from specialized medical equipment, medications, assistance with accommodations or even counselling.
Buddy Bears in partnership with the St. John’s Regional Fire Department; teddy bears are kept on board fire trucks and the fire department use the bears for children when facing car accidents, structural fires or other similar high stress situations.
Happy Tree in partnership with The Avalon Mall and the Salvation Army; toy donations are collected and distributed for children in need throughout the province.
Coats for Kid, an annual children’s winter clothing drive, providing low income families with warm coats free of charge.
Pack the Pub in partnership with The Newfoundland Embassy, non-perishable food donations are collected in support of the Community Food Sharing Association.
Block the Bus In partnership with The Village Shopping Centre in support of SPANL; school supply donations are collected and distributed to school-aged children.
Thanksgiving Food Drive In partnership with Metrobus and Sobeys, non-perishable food donations are collected in support of the Community Food Sharing Association.
Our quarterly Program Funding attracts numerous applications, each of which is carefully reviewed by our Board of Directors. One significant factor in the approval process is the availability of funds. Through fundraisers and the generosity of donors, we strive to support as many charities and community groups as possible.
We fundraise throughout the year to support all of our programs; our biggest fundraiser is our Radio Bingo. We also do 50/50s, Dial A Carol and others.
Here’s the thing, the need only grows. So many more groups are seeking our assistance and we just don’t have sufficient funding to meet these requests. That’s where you come in. Your donation to the VOCM Cares will directly impact communities around the province. The more funds raised, the more groups we can support; it really is that simple.
